How to Reduce Crime in the World
How to Reduce Crime in the World
Hare Krishna! Today, let us discuss how to reduce crime in the world. Crime originates from various negative mentalities—criminal, cruel, selfish, and demonic. The root cause of these tendencies is the "I and mine" mentality (Aham Mameti), which leads to greed, selfishness, and ultimately crime.
The Role of Material Desires in Crime
A person’s necessities are minimal when living alone. However, upon marriage and family life, financial responsibilities increase—educational fees, medical bills, house rent, vehicle and housing loans, and many other expenses. To meet these demands, individuals often become engrossed in personal financial struggles, ignoring the well-being of society. This pressure can lead to unethical decisions and financial crimes such as fraud and corruption.
The Influence of Sinful Activities on Crime
There are four primary sinful activities that contribute to crime:
Intoxication – Alcohol, drugs, and other intoxicants impair judgment, making individuals prone to violent behavior, domestic abuse, reckless driving, and other criminal activities. A person under the influence forgets his real self and acts whimsically, sometimes becoming aggressive or dangerous to others.
Meat-eating – Consumption of animal flesh fosters cruelty, diminishing compassion and increasing selfishness. A society that promotes violence against animals gradually loses sensitivity towards human life as well.
Illicit sex – Extramarital affairs and uncontrolled lust lead to crimes such as abuse, exploitation, and violence. Many crimes occur when individuals engage in immoral relationships that lead to conflicts and unethical actions.
Gambling – Gambling breeds greed, dishonesty, and addiction, leading to financial ruin and criminal behavior. It makes a person desperate to recover losses, often resorting to theft, fraud, or violence.
These four activities—intoxication, meat-eating, illicit sex, and gambling—are the pillars of irreligion, leading to lawlessness and crime.
The Three Gates to Hell
Bhagavad Gita (16.21) states:
Kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhyenam iha vairiṇam.
Lust, anger, and greed are the three gates to hell. When people become obsessed with material desires, they act selfishly, harming others in the process. Unchecked lust leads to exploitation, anger leads to violence, and greed leads to corruption.
Solutions to Reduce Crime
To reduce crime, we must promote moral and spiritual values. Here are some essential steps:
Ban Intoxication – Governments should implement strict laws against alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, and other intoxicants to create a safer society.
Ban Meat Consumption – Encouraging a vegetarian lifestyle fosters compassion and non-violence.
Ban Gambling and Illicit Affairs – Promoting family values and dharma-based relationships reduces selfish and destructive tendencies.
Chant the Holy Names – The most effective way to purify the mind and heart is to chant the names of Lord Krishna:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Adopt a Spiritual Lifestyle
To cultivate a righteous society, one must:
Eat only pure food offered to Lord Krishna as prasadam.
Read and follow the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Caitanya Caritamrita.
Associate with Krishna bhaktas and sadhus.
Observe Ekadashi fasts and celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, Rama Navami, and other festivals.
Avoid artificial and unhealthy foodstuffs such as coffee, tea, and processed junk.
