Rule of Parikshit Maharaja

Following is a Transcription of Lecture on S.B.1.16.1_Eng_Rule of King Parikshit by Ramananda Caitanya Candra das

So this is a very nice chapter. This chapter describes the Kingdom of God how the kings rule this world. What are the laws? The king takes advice from the learned Brahmanas and he executes their order and he performs sacrifices, gives charity, performs austerity, encourages people to perform austerities, challenges the miscreants, he goes to the forest to hunt animals. Which is creating disturbance to the sages? He invades any country which is not subordinate to him. He punishes criminals and thieves. Gives judgment very quickly, does not delay things nowadays, totally everything is topsy turvy the kingdom should be ruled based on the principles set forth by Lord Krishna, the Kings should rule according to the system given by Lord Krishna, Lord Krishna is the proprietor of all the universes

“boktharam yajna tapasam sarva loka maheshwaram suhrdam sarva bhutanam jnatva mam santim rcchati”

King should rule as per the instruction of Shastras, Sadhu, and Guru, so in that way, people will be happy. In the present age, everything is topsy turvy, that people are being misled by rulers who do not follow any dharma, adharma personified. He is ruling the world now. The irreligious personified, His name is called kalipurusha he is ruling this world now.

So, what are the irreligious activities meat-eating, gambling, intoxication, illicit sex-these are adharma these are irreligious activities so because on account of these irreligious activities. People are suffering, dying untimely all over the world, the nature of the soul is immortality Satchidananda it is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss, but on account of not following its dharma of serving Lord Krishna. living entities following adharma That is irreligion that is meat-eating, gambling, intoxication, illicit sex on account of not following one’s own religion people in the world are suffering.

3.00

Because of committing various sinful activities people are dying untimely and also getting various types of diseases, old age is natural you cannot avoid that. There are incurable diseases, long incurable diseases are all because of sinful activity of people, nowadays there is Coronavirus These are the results of sinful activities of people meat-eating, gambling, intoxication, and Illicit sex because of these 4 sinful activities people are dying.

So because of this, they’re dying untimely, astrologically untimely death is connected with southwestern direction, which is presided over by Rahu. He is like Kala, kali southwestern direction Nirrti is the predominating deity of southwestern direction, Nirrti - Untimely death, Rahu - Kalipurusha Leader of all Rakshasas, man-eaters; Irreligious people, Rakshasas ruling in southwestern direction because of which people are dying untimely.

When the kingdom is given to Rakshasas this is what happens kingdom should be ruled by Rajarishis Like Parikshit maharaja, Yudhisthira Maharaja, Rajarishis should rule this world, then there will be everything, Rajarishis are compassionate people, Rajarishis should rule this world, then people will be happy if the Rakshasas rule this word, then people will be unhappy, they will die untimely. so all kinds of difficulties in this world will come. So, there are various things, we have to perform various sacrifices.

5.30

Rajarishis They encourage sacrifices, penance, austerities, charity, they encourage Cow protection, Rajarishis will encourage Brahminical culture, Rajarishis protect Brahmanas, Rakshasas will encourage cow slaughter and, destruction of Brahminical culture So this is the difference between Rakshasa ruling and Rajarishis ruling. So, we all need Rajarishis to rule this world. We don’t need Rakshasas to rule this world. So when Lord Rama came. He killed many Rakshasas, and he established Vibhishana as the King of Lanka, Lord Rama is the emperor of this world.

6.40

He came and established Vibhishana as the King of Lanka. Similarly, we need many devotees of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama to become king of this world. They should be like Rajarishis. They should not be attached to the possessions of this world, because this world, everything belongs to Lord Krishna. Everything must be engaged in the service of Lord Krishna, So, they should not be attached to the possessions, but they should be attached to Lord Krishna. So they should be devotees of Lord Krishna, and then only they can properly rule this world.

7.20

So, in the past we had great Rajarishis like Parikshit maharaja, we had great Rajarishis like Yudhishthira maharaja, they are all very detached from this material possession of money, name, fame, popularity, but they are interested in the service of Lord Krishna. So any work we do, we should do that as a service to Lord Krishna otherwise work causes bondage in this world, anything, we do we should do it as a service to Lord Krishna then the kingdom of God can be established, otherwise, if Rakshasas out of selfishness do it as a sense gratification kingdom of God cannot be established, Rakshasas want to exploit the people they want to enjoy themselves, they are not devotees of Lord Krishna they are enemies of Lord Krishna.

8.20

Because of this, people are suffering, all over the world. So if the kingdom of God has to be established. People have to chant the holy name of Lord Krishna, people have to follow the four regulative principles of no meat-eating, no gambling, no intoxication, or no illicit sex. So if people follow these principles, then the kingdom of God can be established Even Now also. people have to chant the holy name of Lord Krishna. They should perform sacrifices, offer food to Lord Krishna, worship cows, worship Tulasi, worship Brahmanas, all good people should be worshipped. So in this way, the kingdom of God can be established, even now, nowadays kingdom of Rakshasa is going on. So, when Lord Rama came he killed the Rakshasa population in Lanka, Rakshasas are destroyed, because they are exploiting the resources of Lord Krishna.

9.20

They are taking the Goddess of Fortune with them, and they are not giving to Lord Krishna. The Goddess of fortune Lakshmi is the property of Lord Krishna They are exploiting it without giving it to Lord. That is why they are suffering. So, the Rakshasa population will be destroyed by the Rajarishi Lord Rama.

In the past, Many Rajarishis Ruled this planet earth. They, Lord Krishna is also Rajarishi he ruled Dwarka he is Bhagavan Krishnastu Bhagavan Swayam his devotees like Yudhisthira Maharaj, Parikshit Maharaj, etc were Rajarishis.

10.30

As we discussed, Parikshit Maharaja is compared to many great stalwarts. Having got the great qualities he ruled the entire earth. At the time of Maharaja Parkshit’s birth, expert Brahmana astrologers foretold some of his qualities. Maharaja Parkishit developed all those qualities by being a great devotee of the Lord. Real qualification is to become a devotee of the lord and gradually, all the good qualities worthy of possession develop.

11.20

In the material world, People appreciate qualities of being clean, merciful, compassionate, truthful, austere, Separately if you try to develop These qualities it is not so easy, but if you just become a devotee of Lord Krishna, you will develop all the divine qualities, Truthfulness, Cleanliness, Mercifulness, intelligence, Austere, Compassion for all living entities, Equanimity, treating everybody equally. So many good qualities you will develop just because you become a devotee of Lord Krishna, If you are not a devotee of Lord Krishna, You can try to develop these qualities which will not be so perfect.

12.30

Maharaja Parikshit was a Mahabhagavatha. A first-class devotee who was not only well versed in the science of devotion, also able to convert others to become a devotee by his transcendental instructions. So Mahabhagavata Not only they themselves become a devotee They also able to convert others to become devotee by his transcendental instructions so Mahabhagavata he is able to make others devotee, Maharaja Parikshit was Therefore a devotee of the first order in the matters of state administration, he used to consult Great Sages, Brahmins for scriptural advice. So the society was running perfectly under the guidance of Brahmanas, the king used to rule, Vaishyas used to produce, Sudras used to support all these categories of higher castes.

13.30

So, society was running peacefully, whereas now there are no qualified Brahmanas, for giving advisory to the head of the state, or state executives. Society is in a chaotic condition because they have introduced their own laws.

Every day they are introducing new laws, they have introduced divorce law they are planning to introduce homosexual law; they are Introducing new laws every day. These are demonic laws causing an only disturbance in society.

14.30

Maharaj Parkishit was therefore a devotee of first-order who used to consult great sages and learned Brahmanas, Those who do not follow scriptural injunction. They are like demons so in the present situation they do not follow any scriptural injunction; So that is why so much confusion exists everywhere. Brahmanas were well qualified, they were peaceful, truthful, clean, compassionate. these Brahmanas were in the mode of goodness - Sattva guna they have many good qualities, they were not greedy, lusty, or angry, they were very sober, Peaceful, Brahmanas used to advice by the shastras on how to execute state administration.

15.10

Such Great kings were more responsible than modern elected executive heads because they obliged the great authorities by following their instructions left in Vedic literature, so the responsibility of a king responsibility of father and mother is that he should make sure that the dependents, the citizens, they engage their life in spiritual development. That is the main objective of taking the leadership position one should not become a father, mother, guru if he is unable to deliver his dependents from the cycle of birth and death. So this is the responsibility of the king and responsibility of all the executive heads of the state, and the father, mother, guru, to deliver their dependents. These leaders used to follow the instructions of the great sages and teachers, and they used to encourage all other dependents to follow these instructions.

16.30

Now they are introducing so many laws, every week, every month, and amend it later. repeatedly they pass a law and alter it again, So this is going on like a childish play the rules and regulations were already set forth by great sages like Manu, Yagnavalkya, Parasara, and other liberated sages, and the enactments were all suitable for all ages in all places. Therefore the rules and regulations were standard and without flaws or defects.

17.40

If people follow the experienced sages So many problems in this world Can be avoided it is said that women should not be given any education or freedom. A woman is not supposed to be sent to Gurukula but nowadays woman is being sent to, schools and they’re freely mixing with all kinds of men, they should be always under the care of father, husband, and son, So many rules are given.

18.10

There is no question of divorce or widow marriage. So many laws are there in kali yuga because some people misuse the Shastras they have rejected all these laws, they have started their own law which promotes divorce, illicit sex, meat-eating, gambling, intoxication. So all these things are being introduced.

18.45

Kings like maharaja Parikshit had their council of advisors and all the members of the Council were either great sages or Brahmans of the first order they did not accept any salary because they were self-sufficient. Brahmanas means they never accept any salary. They never accept any job, they give advise as per the shastra, the state would get best advise without expenditure they were themselves “sama darshi” equal to everyone both man and animal they would not advise the king to protect man and Instruct him to kill poor animals. Praja means those who have taken birth in a particular country whether men or animal. Everyone should be given equal treatment and protection.

20.00

So they will not advise kings to give protection to man and instruct him to kill the poor animals. Nowadays, they have introduced laws which permit the killing of animals, which are old, and which are not giving milk, They have also approved to, uproot trees in the forest, uprooting many trees in the forest and cities, Generates excess heat.

20.34

The Trees used to consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the Environment. Having many trees keeps the surrounding cool. Which are sources of happiness and good health. The Rakshasas are killing animals. uprooting trees, because of which they are creating hellish conditions in cities.

21.00

The Brahmanas and Sages were great liberated souls so they knew perfectly well how all living beings would be happy. Nowadays, you see many MLAs, MPs are criminal convicts or criminals themselves, or they have undergone imprisonment or they have some criminal background. Such people are elected to the post of, MLA, MP, sometimes they are also elected to the post of Chief Minister and, Prime Minister.

22.00

The council members during Parikshit maharaja time were all self-realized, souls and they knew perfectly well how all living beings in his state will be happy both in this life and next.

22.20.

The greatly self-realized souls. Used to follow the scriptural injunctions, they knew what is the purpose of this life, how to execute the injection of shastra, how to live happily in this life, how to go back to God and back to the spiritual world.

22.45

They were not concerned with the hedonistic philosophy of eat, drink, be merry and enjoy Such council members. They were not giving importance to materialistic enjoyments of life they were philosophers in the real sense, they knew well, what is the mission of human life. They were all concerned. We're very responsible, they knew that the mission of human life is how to realize ourselves. when we know what is the goal of human life then we all have to work according to that goal.

23.30

The council members were advising, all the executive heads to follow the scriptural injunctions. and work towards reaching the goal or mission of human life.

24.00

You work, you eat, beget children, give charity, you perform austerity, every activity must be done in order to achieve the aim of human life which is going back to Godhead, realizing oneself, realizing one’s position with respect to God.

24.12

Under all these obligations, the advisory council of the king would give correct directions, and the king or executive head, being himself a qualified devotee of the Lord, would scrutinizingly follow them for the welfare of the state.

24.26

So, the kings used to follow the Acharyas, the Brahmanas and because these people follow the scriptural injunctions, the people will be happy. They are the real welfare workers of society.

25.00

The devotees, the Narapathis, the Narendra because they follow the instructions of sages. The Brahmanas, The state in the days of Maharaja Yudhisthira or Maharaja Pariksit was a welfare state in the real sense of the term because no one was unhappy in that state, be he man or animal. Maharaja Pariksit was an ideal king for a welfare state of the world.

25.37

During the time of Maharaja Yudhisthira, No one was unhappy whether man or animal, he administered generously to everyone. He was exactly like a father, He had no personal ambition, he was freed from all sorts of sense gratification, due to his continuous service to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna,

26.11

The news even reached the celestial planets about Mahäräja Yudhiñöhira’s worldly possessions, the sacrifices by which he would attain a better destination, his queen, his stalwart brothers, his extensive land, his sovereignty over the planet earth, and his fame, etc. the opulence of the king were so enchanting that the denizens of heaven would aspire for it because he was absorbed with the Lord, nothing could satisfy him except the Lord's Service.

S.B.1.12.5-6

26.45

So Parikshit maharaja time. Everything was very nice there were sufficient rains, everyone was happy, all the rivers flowing under a diverse season so as timely as the rainy season. Everything was systematically happening. So this is the pious rule.

Buy my book Rule of Saintly Kings

A kingdom, state, or empire must be governed under the instructions of saintly persons and brahmaṇas like the Kumaras. When monarchy ruled throughout the world, the monarch was actually directed by a board of brahmaṇas and saintly persons. The king, as the administrator of the state, executed his duties as a servant of the brahmaṇas. It was not that the kings or brahmaṇas were dictators, nor did they consider themselves proprietors of the state. The kings were also well versed in Vedic literature and thus were familiar with the injunction of Sri isopanisad: isavasyam idaṁ sarvam — everything that exists belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Bhagavad-gita Lord Kṛṣṇa also claims that He is the proprietor of all planetary systems (Sarva-Loka-maheśvaram). Since this is the case, no one can claim to be the proprietor of the state. The king, president, or head of the state should always remember that he is not the proprietor but the servant.
